Volvo Pure Tension Pavilion

Company: SDA - Synthesis Design + Architecture

Role: Project Architect / Associate

Client: Volvo Italy

The Pure Tension Pavilion was a portable solar-powered tensile membrane structure commissioned by Volvo Car Italia for the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid electric car. The pavilion not only charged the car but also flat-packed to fit in the trunk of the car and assembled in less than one hour.  It was an experimental structure that, similar to a concept car, was a working prototype that speculates on the future of personal mobility and alternative energy sources while also exploring digital design methodologies and innovative structural solutions.
